In wake of white shark's death, Aquarium launches "Must Love Sharks" campaign.

A female great white shark found tangled in a fish net near Baja, California on Tuesday, May 11th turned out to be a shark the Monterey Bay Aquarium successfully kept on exhibit for 69 days before re-releasing into the wild. She was simply known as Number 5, and she was the fifth juvenile great white to be fostered in the Aquarium's Outer Bay's 1-million gallon tank. She traveled over 500 miles south before being accidentally caught by commercial fishermen.

Number 5's untimely death underscores the importance of the Aquarium's "Must Love Sharks" campaign. The campaign encourages people to share why they love of sharks using social networks like Facebook and Twitter. They also have Podcasts to educate and engage people about the importance of these top predators.

Senate Gets a Climate and Energy Bill, Modified by a Gulf Spill That Still Grows

The bill’s overall goal is to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 17 percent (compared with 2005 levels) by 2020, and by 83 percent by 2050. The targets match those in a House bill passed last year and in the Obama administration’s announced policy goal. The sponsors rewrote the section on offshore oil drilling in recent days to reflect mounting concern over the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, raising new hurdles for any future drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts while allowing it to proceed off Louisiana, Texas and Alaska.

A 2nd garbage patch: Plastic soup seen in Atlantic

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Researchers are warning of a new blight on the ocean: a swirl of confetti-like plastic debris stretching over thousands of square miles (kilometers) in a remote expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

The floating garbage — hard to spot from the surface and spun together by a vortex of currents — was documented by two groups of scientists who trawled the sea between scenic Bermuda and Portugal's mid-Atlantic Azores islands.

So Long Sardines: America's Last Cannery Closing

For the past 135 years, sardine canneries have been as much a part of Maine's small coastal villages as the thick Down East fog. It's been estimated that more than 400 canneries have come and gone along the state's long, jagged coast.

The lone survivor, the Stinson Seafood plant here in this eastern Maine shoreside town, shuts down this week after a century in operation. It is the last sardine cannery not just in Maine, but in the United States.

Surfer gets fundraising assist from Minke whale

DANA POINT, Calif. — A surfer was halfway into a fundraising paddle off the Southern California coast when she says she got a two-hour escort from a 30-foot Minke whale.

Friends and relatives on a support boat took photos and video of the March 28 encounter between Jodie Nelson and the whale she named Larry.

Nelson was making a 40-mile paddle from Santa Catalina to Dana Point when the whale came within a paddle's reach of the surfer. She says the whale would roll over and expose its belly, then go beneath the surface and blow bubbles under her, causing a horrible stench when they reached the surface.

She had hoped to raise $100,000 for Boarding for Breast Cancer and Keep A Breast Foundation. She says publicity from the whale rendezvous helped her top $120,000.

Oregon Coast Aquarium Sea Lion Dies in Freak Drowning

(Newport, Oregon) – A freak accidental drowning took the life of a recent addition to Newpor'’s Oregon Coast Aquarium – a female sea lion named Bailey.

Bailey was one of two sea lions playing in their habitat, when the pair somehow loosened a filtration drain cover, the aquarium said. Bailey got caught in the resulting suction from the drain, which kept her from being able to surface and get to air.
